This conference volume brings together some of the best-known researchers in happiness economics and development economics to address the broad issue of subjective well-being and income growth in developing countries. A number of chapters are devoted to China, and underline how the rise in unemployment and income inequality has undermined the well-being effects of economic development. These findings help to explain why average happiness in China appears not to have risen, and may even have fallen, over the recent period. The book also emphasises a notable changes in the distribution of happiness over the course of economic development: while average happiness may be only little affected, there is a striking reduction in happiness inequality. This is argued to be a piece of good news for developing countries.
